6 Fall Wellness Trends You’re About to See Everywhere, from Adaptogenic Drinks to Self-Pleasure as Self-Care

Sure, it’s still fairly early in August, but we can’t help but get excited about fall. Between the cozy nights in, comfy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes (ordered unabashedly, of course), it’s a refreshing change of pace from swimming, sipping sangria and sweating. But what does this autumn hold for us, wellness-wise? From the importance of self-pleasure to delicious adaptogenic drinks, here are six wellness trends you can expect to see a whole lot of soon.

1. Hiking

With the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 looming, some folks are growing wary of crowded indoor gatherings in stadiums, restaurants or even gyms and indoor fitness classes. Good thing, then, that fall is prime time for hiking—an ideal combination of exercise and foliage-spotting. According to data from the Outdoor Industry Association, looking at April, May and June of 2020 versus the same period in 2019, unweighted participation rates for day hiking rose more than any other activity measured, up 8.4 percentage points. 2. Self-Pleasure as Self-Care

In 2021, there’s more to sex than just, you know, doin’ it. Sexual wellness—self-pleasure, in particular—is finally being seen as a form of self-care. In fact, per a summer 2020 report by pleasure product brand Tenga 84 percent of Americans now recognize masturbation as a form of self-care (compared to 44 percent in 2016). So go ahead and order that sex toy you’ve been eyeing and treat yourself to a little extra self-loving.

3. California Sober

Though the term doesn’t appear in any official medical literature, California Sober typically describes a person who abstains from drugs and alcohol with a few exceptions. Because it’s not as rigid as straight sobriety, being California Sober means different things to different people. Most commonly, California Sober means abstaining from all substances but cannabis, though the definition sometimes includes psychedelics like LSD, ayahuasca and psilocybin. Still others choose to drink in moderation as well. Proponents of a California Sober lifestyle appreciate that it’s more nuanced than total sobriety, allowing for a healthier, more moderate relationship with substances.

4. Adaptogenic Drinks

You’ve likely noticed an increase in non-alcoholic drinks meant to aid in a California Sober lifestyle or just in an attempt to curb excess drinking. This fall, expect these drinks to go one step further with adaptogenic ingredients. “Adaptogens are basically a group of plants that you take over a long period of time in order to help your body adapt to stress and other ailments,” says nutritionist Chelsea Williams. And while these herbs, roots and mushrooms are definitely having a moment, they’ve actually been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. But it’s important to know, they don’t eliminate stress. Instead, adaptogens help you cope with stressful circumstances by regulating hormones. While there’s no clear consensus on exactly how many adaptogens exist, most experts seems to agree that there are approximately 15 plants that fall into the adaptogenic category. Some of the most common ones include ashwagandha, ginseng, ­­holy basil and maca, which you can find in delicious drinks from Vybes, Kin Euphorics, Recess, Sunwink and Trip, to name a few favorites.

5. Bathing Rituals

No offense to showers, but this fall is going to be all about baths—really relaxing ones. Pinterest saw a 180 percent increase in searches year over year for spiritual cleansing baths and a 90 percent increase in searches year over year for full moon bath ritual. According to Pinterest’s ‘Pinterest Predicts’ report, “This isn’t your typical tub. Bath time will get an upgrade with influences from ancient rituals. This year, you’ll see people carving out time for an extra special soaking experience.” Whether you go big and install a deep soaking tub into your bathroom or just stock up on your favorite candles and bath bombs, it’s all about taking a quotidian task and making it an elevated, self-care experience.

6. Face Yoga

No mat necessary for this one. As it turns out, face yoga does not involve actual yoga poses. It’s just a catchier way of describing a set of facial exercises or repetitive movements you can do to tone the muscles beneath your skin. According to Fumiko Takastu, the founder of The Face Yoga Method, it’s a completely natural alternative to anti-aging remedies that tones your facial muscles and increases circulation and blood flow to create a more youthful and radiant complexion.
