6 fatally stabbed in attack outside a kindergarten in China; suspect detained

At least six people are dead and one has been injured in a Monday morning stabbing outside a kindergarten in China, according to police and local media reports.

The attack took place in Lianjiang, a city in the southeastern province of Guangdong, according to a statement from police, and shortly after the attack officials said they arrested a 25-year-old local man in connection to the killings.

According to local media outlet The Global Times, the stabbing took place about 7:40 am and the suspect, a Lianjiang resident, was detained by officers at about 8 a.m.

Police working to ID victims

Police did not immediately identify the victims, but citing witnesses, the outlet reported the casualties include one teacher, two parents and three children.

Employees who answered at the Lianjiang police headquarters, who were working to confirm the victims' identities, declined to give more details, the Associated Press reported.

Carrying a knife walking past the playground

Dafeng News cited an unidentified witness who said the suspect’s child had been struck earlier by the car of one of the stabbing victims. The outlet also reported one of the people killed was a teacher at the kindergarten.

On its website, Dafen News referenced video circulating online showing a man carrying a knife walking past the kindergarten playground. Other video, the outlet reported, showed at least four people in a pool of blood outside the school.

The case remained under investigation Monday, Lianjiang police said.

In 2010, 20 children were killed at another kindergarten in the country.

And in 2020, 39 people were hurt when police said a school guard attacked them with a knife.
