6 high school students earn Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week (Sept. 26-Oct. 1)

Shasta County athletes found ample success at their games last week.

A West Valley senior won a golf tournament, a Foothill sophomore accelerated past her competition in cross country and a Central Valley senior has played strong tennis throughout the fall.

Football players from Anderson and West Valley also led dominant performances last Friday.

The multitude of achievements made choosing one athlete of the week difficult, so the Record Searchlight selected three male and three female students as the Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week.

Let's meet those who are being recognized.

Female Athletes of the Week

Brooklyn Hodgdon

School: West Valley

Sport: Golf

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Hodgdon won the Helen Lengfeld Memorial Girls Golf Tournament at the Wilcox Oaks Golf Club in Red Bluff on Monday. Hodgdon shot a 90 overall on 18 holes, including a 46 on the final nine holes.

Jasmine Corliss

School: Foothill

Sport: Cross country

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Corliss has been on a rampant pace since transferring to Foothill as a foreign exchange student from Queensland, Australia. Corliss won the 3-mile EAL-SRL Meet #1 at Foothill High School in 19 minutes and 19.61 seconds last Wednesday. Her finishing time was 39 seconds faster than second-place finisher senior Chloe Alchin of Pleasant Valley (19:58.53).

Corliss has won each of her three races in 2022. She ran the 2.5-miles-long Las Plumas Cross Country Invitational in 15:18.6 on Sept. 9 and the 5,000-meter Black Butte Invite in 20:31.2 on Sept. 23.

School: Central Valley

Sport: Tennis

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Lain led Central Valley to a 9-0 sweep over West Valley in tennis last Wednesday. Lain holds a 5-1 record as a singles player and 4-2 record as a doubles player.

Male Athletes of the Week

School: Anderson

Sport: Football

Class: Senior

Position: Fullback and middle linebacker

Team contributions: Cady led Anderson to its first win of the season against Oroville 52-6 last Friday at home. Cady ran for 28 yards and scored a touchdown. He led Anderson with nine tackles and recovered a forced fumble. The result gave coach John Stewart his first win with the Cubs.

Noah Mason and Logan Rasmussen

School: West Valley

Sport: Football

Class: Senior and sophomore, respectively

Position: Quarterback and wide receiver/defensive back, respectively

Team contributions: Mason and Rasmussen led West Valley to a decisive 34-6 win over Red Bluff at home last Friday. Mason completed seven of 10 passes for two touchdowns, added two rushing touchdowns and ran for 96 yards.

Rasmussen scored two touchdowns, one on offense and defense. He caught a 25-yard pass from Mason and returned a 20-yard interception in the second quarter. Rasmussen finished with two catches for 38 yards, two interceptions and completed seven tackles including one for loss.

West Valley has won two straight games and outscored its last two opponents 86-6.
