These 6 North State students got named Athletes of the Week (Nov. 21-26)

Six students, four from Shasta County and two from Siskiyou County, stood out last week for their performances in cross country, basketball and football.

Shots were falling for a junior Mount Shasta guard, and a senior guard from Central Valley helped facilitate her team's offense to an impressive road victory. Runners from Yreka and Foothill ran impressive times at their final race in Fresno last Saturday.

A Fall River defensive lineman was Wolverine-like in his tackling approach last Wednesday, and a U-Prep sophomore basketball player helped the Panthers jump to a quick start on Nov. 22.

Henry Baun

School: Yreka

Sport: Cross Country

Class: Junior

Team contributions: Baun ran the fastest time of any local runner during the CIF State Cross Country Championships in Fresno last Saturday. Baun navigated 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) and set his personal record in 15 minutes and 36.5 seconds during the Division IV boys race. Baun finished in 11th place of 201 runners and smashed his old personal record by 40 seconds. Baun was one of five male runners locally to place in the top 100 in either the CIF State Division III, IV or V races.

Jasmine Corliss

School: Foothill

Sport: Cross Country

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Corliss had a memorable sendoff in her final athletic race for Foothill. Corliss, a foreign exchange student from Queensland, Australia, ran the fastest local time by any female runner during the CIF State Cross Country Championships last Saturday in Fresno. Corliss ran the Division III race in 19:14.9 and finished 41st of 212 runners. Fellow competitor, sophomore Elle Merrill from Shasta, finished in 19:32.3. Corliss led eight local runners who finished top 100 in the Division III, IV and V races.

Isaiah Wortman

School: Fall River

Sport: Football

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Wortman was the factor on defense that ultimately helped Fall River win the CIF Northern Section Division V title last Wednesday 14-13 against Portola. Wortman made two eventual game saving tackles against the Tigers. Wortman brought down a ball carrier two yards short of the end zone before halftime. He also stopped a 2-point conversion attempt after Fall River scored its second touchdown. Wortman finished the game with 13 tackles and two sacks in the second half. Fall River has 31 straight wins. The Bulldogs haven't lost a game since Oct. 11, 2019. Fall River football declined an invitation to compete in the CIF State playoffs.

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Lain on Nov. 22 filled lanes and hit her teammates for open looks on the road against Mount Shasta. The 5-foot-7 guard was also an aggressive rebounder. In total, Lain scored 14 points, dished five assists, four steals and her team collectively made 11 3-pointers to rout Mount Shasta 71-21.

Class: Junior

Team contributions: Riccomini chose his spots on the court wisely during his team's season opener at home against Central Valley on Nov. 22. Riccomini made shots from the mid-range, connected on 3-point shots and put away tip-ins around the paint to score a career-high 41 points. Riccomini's efforts were needed to put away the Falcons at home 73-54. Mount Shasta plays a basketball tournament in Durham High School between Dec. 1 and Dec. 3.

JoAnna Warren

School: U-Prep

Sport: Basketball

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Warren scored 20 points and helped the defending CIF Northern Section Division IV champions U-Prep beat Colusa on the road 59-46. U-Prep hosts Orland on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
