6 things to do in Brunswick County this week, including a Japanese performance, plant sale

Prepare to be amazed by an exciting storytelling show incorporating Japanese folktales with origami, Japanese music, and magic tricks with Yasu Ishida for his performance of "Japanese Magical Journey." Ishida, a magic story artist, will guide you to the enchanting land of Japan.

Stories will come together in visual ways that will truly impress you. After the stories, families get to make origami that flips, jumps and flies.

Ishida has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre for Young Audiences and has been performing all around the country.

The performance will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 24 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way Leland.

Creek Week

The town of Leland is participating in the Clean Water Education Partnership’s third annual Regional Creek Week. Creek Week includes several events to engage the public on the importance of clean and healthy waterways.

  • Clean up the future Sturgeon Creek Park as part of the Leland Green Sweeps program. Equipment will be provided. Meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way. There will be a presentation about stormwater and drainage, then participants can drive to the cleanup site. Free.   • Storm Drain Marking with Cape Fear River Watch. Through Leland's partnership with Cape Fear River Watch, participants will permanently glue stainless steel markings to storm drains in the Westport community. Participants will also distribute door hangers describing the importance of keeping stormwater free of pollution. The event will be 10-11 a.m. Friday, March 24, beginning near the Westport Clubhouse, 875 Merestone Drive, Leland. Free. In late March, many gardeners are anxious to get out in their gardens and start planting, but late season frosts can still harm tender plants and ruin gardeners’ hard work. The Brunswick County Extension Master Gardeners Volunteer Association will be holding a Spruce-Up Your Containers Plant Sale. The sale will feature colorful annuals, herbs, and greenery specially selected for containers that will brighten your entryways and outdoor spaces all season long.

The sale will be held 9 a.m.-noon (or until sell out) Friday, March 24 at the Brunswick County Extension office, 25 Referendum Drive, Bolivia

One day boating course

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide a special one-day boating course that satisfies all state boating education requirements. Taught by certified USCG Auxiliary instructors, the USCG Boating America course applies to all recreational watercraft including powerboats, PWCs, sailboats and paddle craft.

Any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, must complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 hp or greater on North Carolina waters.

The course will cover general information about boats and maintenance, preparing for safe and enjoyable outings, navigation rules and aids to navigation, guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely, what to do in case of boating emergencies, and state-specific laws and regulations you must follow.

The class will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center, 1 Leeds Road, Boiling Spring Lakes. The fee is $35 per person or $30 for two or more attendees. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the door. Register by email to CGAuxSafeBoating@ec.rr.com.
