6 tips to fight summer frizz

Summer is synonymous with Mai Tais at the beach, barbeques in the backyard, glowing sun-kissed skin and… frizzy hair. As much as we love the pleasant warm weather, it’s hard to embrace the poofy, unmanageable mess your hair turns into after just a few minutes outdoors. But that doesn’t mean you have to keep your hair tied back. These tried and tested frizz fighting tips will ensure you can let your hair down and enjoy the summer.

Your fight against frizz starts in the shower. Use a rich, smoothing shampoo and conditioner that will really hydrate your strands. Dry, dehydrated hair is more likely to absorb moisture from the air, causing the cuticles (the tiny scale like structures that that cover each strand) to lift and swell, making your hair frizzy. The Moroccanoil Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner infuse each strand with argan oil and argan butter while replenishing essential proteins for smooth, healthy hair. After you’ve cleansed your scalp with the shampoo, generously coat the hair from mid-length to tip with the conditioner. Rinse out with cool water – this helps seal the cuticles and lock in the conditioner.

It’s also important to pay attention to how you dry your hair. Rubbing it vigorously with a towel can disturb the cuticles. Not only does this make your hair look dull (because light bounces off unevenly) it also makes it easy for moisture to enter the hair and cause it to get all big and poofy. Gently pat dry your hair with a microfiber towel or soak up excess moisture with an old cotton tee that will dry the hair without agitating the cuticles.

As soon as you step out of the bathroom, using your fingers comb in a leave-in product through the lengths of your T-shirt dried hair. This is important because your hair starts to absorb moisture as it begins to dry. The Kevin Murphy Young Again is a light leave in treatment oil that actually repels moisture to keep hair smooth. Infused with immortelle, a key ingredient in anti-ageing skincare, it also acts as an anti-oxidant against environmental damage and conditions the hair so your hair is less likely to be frizzy.

It’s now time to blow dry your hair. It may sound counterintuitive to blow dry your hair when heat styling is the very thing that dries hair making it dehydrated and prone to frizz. But done right, a blow dry can actually help minimise frizz. The secret is to use a styling product that also offers heat protection, like the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment. It keeps the hair soft, smooth and manageable long after you’re done with your blow dry.

Keep in mind that the kind of hair dryer you use also makes a difference when it comes to tackling frizz. Opt for ionic or tourmaline hair dryers that emit negative ions to bust the positive ions in water, thus cutting drying time – which equals less damage. Those with fine hair will notice that drying their hair with an ionic dryer also reduces some of the volume so may want to stick with a tourmaline dryer instead. Drying your hair on high heat, but medium speed with the concentrator nozzle pointing downwards will also speed up drying time while negating frizz.

Finally, maintain your sleek, smooth do by sleeping on a silk pillowcase. Silk covers are less likely to cause friction, and don’t absorb as much moisture as cotton cases reducing chances of your hair getting frizzy. If you can’t get your hands on a silk case, simply put your hair into a silk scarf before you go to bed and wake up with silky, smooth locks.
