6 ways to check road conditions before heading out

If you're trying to avoid traffic, check on road closures, or even find gas or parking, preparing in advance might be a good idea.

As we make it through the rest of winter, or just to stay informed on any given day, here are several ways to check road conditions before you head out.

Google Traffic

Google Traffic, a feature on Google Maps, is used by millions around the world to navigate road conditions. The feature gives users real-time access to traffic speed, crashes, construction, road closures, and other incidents on major roads.

Google Traffic can be used online or downloaded to most mobile devices. To access, select the "Traffic" option from a drop-down menu in Google Maps in the upper right corner.

The feature works by "analyzing GPS-specific locations that are sent to Google by a large number of mobile phone users," according to Google.

Mi Drive Map by MDOT

"Mi Drive is a construction and traffic information website that allows users to view traffic cameras, speeds, locate incidents, and construction," according to Michigan's Department of Transportation. MDOT "produces an updated version of the state transportation map annually."

The map can be used by any Michigan resident or visitor. Enter your city or zip code into the website and access information through the legend in the upper left corner.

To receive traffic alerts from MDOT, subscribe to email updates here.

Michigan Traveler App

Though not created by MDOT, Michigan Traveler allows drivers to access MDOT's road data through a phone application.

"You can view traffic cameras, read alerts about construction and other road-related issues, see snowplows, truck parking, and get stats from weather stations," according to the application details.

Michigan Traveler can only be downloaded by Apple users.

MDOT's Twitter Accounts

MDOT has several Twitter accounts posting daily and frequent updates on major roads in Michigan. Drivers can check their local MDOT page for road closures due to construction or accidents, as well as updates on which roads have been cleared.

The Wayne County Compass

For Wayne County residents, a local website and application is available.

With the Wayne County Compass, drivers "can view traffic and weather conditions, live camera feeds and follow Wayne County service trucks in real time as they plow and salt area roads," according to their website. "You can also report and track road hazards you see while out on Wayne County roads."

The service can be used online or downloaded through the Apple Store or Google Play.

Road conditions Facebook groups

Michigan residents have taken it upon themselves to create Facebook groups that keep drivers informed on local road conditions.

Updates, questions and concerns are submitted by locals. Here are multiple groups you can join:
