6 ways to score baby formula during nationwide shortage

The shortage of baby formula in the U.S. is making parents frantic. Due to the pandemic, recalls, and a mix of other factors, formula is running low everywhere and many are in search of the best places to stock up quickly.

If you are in need of finding spots to purchase baby formula today, here are some suggestions:

Shop at local retailers

While supplies are low, retailers such as Walmart and Target do still have formula available depending on where you live. From Enfamil, Similac, Nestle, and more, these grocery stores have some stock. Check online before visiting to see what is in stock at the location nearest to you.

You may also have luck at CVS pharmacy. While base prices are high, the convenience store offers tons of deals including buy one, get one 50% off. Additionally, CVS Extra Care Card members receive an emailed coupon every week for 40% off one item.

Buy from Amazon

Check out formula deals on Amazon if you are unable to find products in stores. For consumers who qualify, many formulas for infants are SNAP EBT eligible.

Also, Amazon offers a Subscribe & Save discount for many grocery items, with most baby formula included in the deal.

Try new brands

Some major brands, like Similac, seem to be affected by this shortage more than others. If your usual brand is running low, try looking for a new option.

At Costco, you can buy in bulk to be safe, and save money as well, with a $49.99 3-pack of Kirkland non-GMO powdered formula.

Purchase directly from the manufacturer

While shopping locally is often more accessible, companies like Enfamil and Gerber allow you to buy straight from their website.

Enfamil even offers a "Subscribe to Save" program where members will receive 10% off of every order.

Currently, Gerber is completely out of stock on most items.

Call your local food bank

The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks helps millions of people find groceries in their communities every year. Feeding America, as well as smaller local food pantries, are often already stocked up and prepared for crises. If you are unable to find formula in stores or online, contact a food bank close to you.

If available, many of these organizations will provide you with limited products free of charge.

Contact a pediatrician

If you are thinking of switching brands of your baby’s formula, talk to your child’s doctor to make sure it will be safe.

Oftentimes, doctor’s offices have sample size formulas for patients. Use this option to your advantage and take home as much as they will give away.

Amid the nationwide shortage, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new website to help parents find baby formula: hhs.gov/formula/index.html.
