Get on up, Ditmas Park-Flatbush! It's Saturday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Clouds and sun. High: 21 Low: 12.

Here are the top five stories today in Ditmas Park-Flatbush:

  1. Flatbush is among the neighborhoods with the highest number of fires per year, according to analysis of FDNY data. In the year starting in May 2020, the neighborhood saw 605 fires, indicative of a city-wide trend of fires in communities of color. (Documented NY)

  2. New York's statewide eviction moratorium expires today, January 15th, barring a last-minute extension. There are roughly 200,000 cases open in eviction court right now, and while it's unclear how many of them are likely to result in immediate eviction proceedings, tenant groups across the state have cause for concern. If you're concerned about being evicted, the best first step is to call 311. All New York City residents, regardless of immigration status, are entitled to free legal assistance. 3. Monday is Martin Luther King Day, and there's lots of ways to get involved in community service across Brooklyn in honor of the civil rights leader's legacy. Care for the chicken coops at Imani Garden in Weeksville, paint a mural in Sunset Park, and more. (Brooklyn Reader)
