Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff celebrated Pride Month by hosting a reception at their residence at the Naval Observatory in partnership with GLAAD, the LGBTQ+ rights group.

The night included a call for leaders in the community to unite in the fight for LGBTQ+ acceptance and equality.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Winner and trans rights advocate Sasha Colby emceed the program. Other speakers included Second Gentleman Emhoff as well as GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. Tony award-winning nonbinary actor Alex Newell sang Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” with the audience also singing along. Sam Charney, a young LGBTQ+ advocate from Colorado introduced the Harris at the event.

More than 32 states and territories were represented among attendees, according to a White House official.

As people left, they were given copies of The Advocate, which features an exclusive cover story with Harris in the July/August issue.

Additionally, guests received a Pride-themed, rainbow-colored, handheld, foldable clacking fan emblazoned with the VP’s seal and signature.
