64-year-old Lakeland man on bicycle killed Sunday on U.S. 98 North

LAKELAND — A 64-year-old Lakeland man riding a bicycle was killed late Sunday afternoon on U.S. 98 North in a crash that involved three other vehicles.

Lakeland police said in a news release Monday that the crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of U.S. 98. Police said the bicyclist was riding north in the southbound bicycle lane. At the same time, a 2019 BMW SUV was traveling south on U.S. 98, followed by a 2005 Honda sedan, driven by Daniel Eli Viana, 36, of Beverly Hills, Florida. The Honda entered the right turn lane to enter a business and struck the bicyclist head-on, police said.

The Honda then swerved, striking the BMW before spinning out, crossing the center median and into the northbound lanes, where it was struck by a 2015 Dodge pickup traveling north, police said. The Honda continued across U.S. 98, hitting the curb before coming to rest in a field. All drivers stopped and remained at the scene.

Lakeland police, Polk County Fire Rescue and Lakeland Fire Department arrived on scene and began life-saving measures, but the bicyclist was declared dead at the scene. Lakeland police refused to identify the bicyclist, saying it it was trying to notify next of kin.

Viana and a passenger in the pickup were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
