Who was the man?

Police identified the man fatally shot as 37-year-old Landon Eastep.

What law enforcement agencies were involved?

Six Metro Nashville Police Department officers, two Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and one off-duty Mt Juliet police officer all fired their weapons, according to MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron.

Clips of body-worn camera footage released by MNPD late Thursday night show Eastep surrounded by officers and police vehicles as a helicopter circled overhead.

Aaron listed the names of six MNPD officers involved as:

  • Officer James Kidd (MNPD)

  • Officer Justin Pinkelton (MNPD)

  • Officer Sean Williams (MNPD)

  • Officer Edin Plancic (MNPD)

  • Sgt. Steven Carrick (MNPD)

  • Officer Brian Murphy (MNPD)

He did not name the THP troopers or off-duty Mt. Juliet officer who shot.

Video posted to social media shows more than a dozen armed, uniformed officers on the interstate with their weapons drawn. At one point in the video, the man raises his arm toward some of the officers and multiple officers open fire. More than a dozen shots can be heard.

Was the man armed?

According to the TBI and Nashville police, a trooper saw Eastep sitting on a guardrail and went to check on him. At some point, the trooper said, Eastep pulled out a box cutter.

The trooper attempted to negotiate with Eastep and an off-duty Mount Juliet Police Department officer also stopped, along with back-up officers from MNPD and additional THP troopers.

"The negotiations with Eastep, aimed at convincing him to surrender, continued for approximately 30 minutes," the TBI reported. "At one point, the man appears to adjust his stance and reach for what was later identified as a metal cylindrical object at his waist."

Aaron said the metal object was not a firearm in a video posted late Thursday night that included the clips of body camera footage.

Did police release body camera footage?

Late Thursday night, the Metro Nashville Police Department released body-worn camera footage on its social media channels.

Who is investigating?

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. TBI investigates all officer-involved shootings. The Nashville District Attorney's office will also work with TBI.

MNPD will conduct a routine administrative review of the shooting, Aaron said.

Metro Nashville Community Oversight said in a Twitter post that its executive director was also responding to the scene.
