A 65-year-old Dartmouth man is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in Chelsea.

CHELSEA — A 65-year-old Dartmouth man is charged with stabbing a woman to death in Chelsea on Tuesday after allegedly admitting to the deed to police, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Angel T. Alvarez is being held without bail after being charged with murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a press release from the Suffolk County DA reads. According to the release, investigators learned that Alvarez and the victim, 59-year-old Margarita Morehead, had been dating for some time before police, around 9:56 a.m. on Tuesday, responded to a call to 44 Lafayette Ave. in Chelsea and found Morehead "unresponsive, in a pool of blood."

Officers observed Morehead had suffered several stabwounds, the release reads. She was later pronounced dead at Cambridge Health Alliance in Everett.

Easy-to-spot car

Investigators connected Alvarez to the victim after witnesses said Morehead had been dating a man who drives a red car with a mismatched hood. According to the DA, Alvarez drives a red car with a black hood.

Investigators went on to locate Alvarez’s vehicle, which was found unoccupied at the intersection of Addison and Eden streets in Chelsea; and observed brown stains on the car's interior and exterior which appeared to be blood, according to the press release.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden says Angel Alvarez, 65, of North Dartmouth, admitted to stabbing his girlfriend Margarita Morehead, 59, in her apartment at 44 Lafayette St., where police found her dead on Tuesday.

DA: Alvarez called authorities, provided location

Later in the evening, the release says, Alvarez contacted Chelsea Dispatch requesting medical attention and stating intent to turn himself in to police. During the call, Alvarez provided his location on Route 16 in Everett, according to the release. Massachusetts state troopers along with Chelsea police responded to the location and took Alvarez into custody.

Stabbing resulted from break-up, Hayden says

Alvarez was booked at the Chelsea Police Department, where he allegedly admitted to investigators during a recorded interview that he had stabbed Morehead multiple times after she attempted to end the relationship, the release reads.

“Instead of dealing with the reality of an ended relationship with restraint and dignity, this man chose a shocking act of violence that ended Margarita Morehead’s life and ushered in eternal grief for her family, friends and relatives," District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. "They will receive all the support they need from our office as this case moves forward."

Judge Christopher Henry ordered Alvarez held without bail, according to Hayden's office. Alvarez is due back in court June 12 for a probable cause hearing.

Help for victim's family

On Wednesday, a GoFundMe campaign, with the title "Bring Margarita Home Again" was launched to raise money for Morehead's memorial services in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. According to the page's author, Morehead "was the sole provider for her elderly 91-year-old mother who lives overseas in the Dominican Republic, along with numerous young nieces and nephews, funding their education and schooling.

"The proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to covering the costs of Margarita's memorial services here in the States and transportation for burial in La Romana, Dominican Republic where she will be laid to rest next to her father, brother, nephew, and other relatives who have gone before her."
