65 Years Ago - West Scranton family to reunite in Libya

Jul. 23—July 23, 1958

Scranton family heading to Tripoli

Mrs. Jean Lee and her five young sons were packed and ready for a journey to northern Africa.

The West Scranton family would join their husband and father, Technical Sgt. John L. Lee, in Tripoli, Libya. Sgt. Lee was stationed at the U.S. Air Force's Wheelus Air Base there.

Jean and the boys, Jackie, Bobby, Jim, Michael and Terry, left on a flight for Charleston, South Carolina, on July 23. From Charleston, the family would then fly to Tripoli and were expected to stay in the ancient city for the next 2 1/2 years.

Comm addition to be dedicated

Mrs. C. Welles Belin and Robert Dixon, of the Waverly Community House, announced the dedication of the house's new addition would take place on Sept. 28.

Thanks to a generous donation from F. Lamont Belin in memory of his wife, Frances Jermyn Belin, the house installed a new heating system for the entire building, and new lighting and a ventilation system for the gymnasium/theater; expanded the theater's stage and seating, created space for dressing rooms, stage workshops and theater storage; and built a four-lane bowling alley with an automatic ball return.

The addition was designed by Waverly architect George M.D. Lewis, and the general contractor on the project was R.D. Richardson Construction of Scranton.
