68-year-old man drives in wrong lane, dies in traffic crash in Panama City Beach

One tourist was rescued from the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday off Public Beach Access 21 in unincorporated Bay County.

PANAMA CITY BEACH − A 68-year-old man died Saturday in a traffic accident on Panama City Beach Parkway.

According to a press release from the Panama City Beach Police Department, the incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. near Sunnyside Apartments.

"A preliminary investigation shows a 2009 Smart Fortwo was traveling west along Panama City Beach Parkway in the eastbound lanes with no headlights on," the release reads. "(It) collided with a 2021 Nissan Rouge that was traveling east along Panama City Beach Parkway."

This caused the Nissan to flip over.

The police identified the driver of the Fortwo as Alvin Gauthreaux, 68, of Panama City Beach. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver and a passenger in the Nissan were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"At this time, it could not be determined if alcohol was a factor," the release reads. "The Panama City Beach Police Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating."
