Buying $68M Colorado ranch near Telluride is like ‘finding a van Gogh in the attic’

Homewood Ranch near Telluride, Colorado, which has been operated by the same family since 1949, has hit the market for $67.75 million — and owning the 2,000-acre property would be no small thing, according to Hall and Hall listing agent Jeff Buerger.

”Simply stated, a ranch like Homewood being offered to the market for the first time in over 50 years is an incredibly rare opportunity in the high-end ranch real estate world,” Buerger said in an email to The Sacramento Bee. “As I have heavily emphasized throughout the summary of this ranch, its value is ‘tethered to its rarity and its inability to be replicated.’ ”

The massive landholding is the last of its kind in the Colorado resort area, according to Hall and Hall.

“Homewood Ranch is not a property that comes along very often,” he added. “Acquiring the last and largest remaining piece of deeded land in proximity to Telluride is like finding a Vincent van Gogh in the attic of your grandparents’ home.”

Telluride is now known for its world-class ski resort, but was undeveloped and mostly undiscovered when the Homewood family bought the property in 1949 to raise sheep and livestock, according to Ryan Homewood.

The family has mostly used the property for cattle grazing and hunting, Homewood told the Wall Street Journal.

Less than 30 minutes from Telluride Ski Resort, the property has a modest, 2,000-square-foot, two-bed, two-bathroom cabin, built in 1971. The land offers panoramic views in every direction. About 25 percent of the land is heavy timber, while the rest is open range and pasture land.

Populations of elk, mule deer, bear and a variety of small game and bird species roam the property, which sits at an elevation of 9,000 to 10,000 feet.

A new owner could use the property to build residential homes, the Journal reported.

In 2021, actor Tom Cruise sold his secluded 320-acre, custom-built Telluride estate for nearly $40 million after only two months on the market.
