7 activities to help you jump start your 2023

Jan. 4—The beginning of the New Year often brings to mind resolutions, commitments to fitness and 365 days of new possibilities. Why not get 2023 jump started with one of these activities?

Take the plunge

The city of Albuquerque is giving 2023 a chilly reception with the Al'burrr'querque Polar Bear Plunge.

From 10:30-11:30 a.m. brave participants are invited to jump into the Sierra Vista Pool, 5001 Montaño Road NW, on Saturday, Jan. 7. Weather depending, the pool should be a brisk 40-45 degrees.

Take the plunge for $40 or ride down the slide for $50. Proceeds will go to help polar bears, penguins and people get their swim on.

Learn about clay

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture is inviting visitors to view the "Evolutions in Clay" pop-up exhibition and then stick around for a special presentation.

From 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, potters Ray Garcia (San Felipe) and Ricardo Ortiz (San Felipe) will be at the museum for an afternoon of storytelling and art making.

Admission to the museum and demonstration is free to New Mexico residents Jan. 8.

Metal at Tumbleroot

Colorado-based band Velnias is coming to Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery on Saturday, Jan. 7.

New Mexico bands TKTWA, Distances and Dead Pattern will also perform.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 advance and $15 day of the show at holdmyticket.com.

Tumbleroot is located at 2791 Agua Fria St., Santa Fe.

Let there be dance

Every week, year-round, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center offers Native American dances.

From noon-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, and Sunday, Jan. 8, Cellicion Traditional Dance Group (Zuni) will be performing at the IPCC, 2401 12th St. NW.

Attendance to the dances is free for museum members or with admission, which starts at $7. Visit indianpueblo.org for more information and tickets.

A new year to get outside

If getting in touch with nature is one of your resolutions this year, head to the bosque.

Join Open Space Nature Guides and Trail Watch Volunteer Stewards in a discussion of the flora and fauna of the bosque. The guided hike starts at the Open Space Visitor Center, 6500 Coors Blvd. NW, and runs 8 a.m.-noon Sunday, Jan. 8.

The hike is free. Participants are asked to bring water, wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

Some fútbol action

Missing the World Cup already? Catch some arena soccer action.

On Saturday, Jan. 7, the New Mexico Runners will take on the Amarillo Bombers at 2:05 p.m. at the Rio Rancho Events Center, 3001 Civic Center Circle NE.

Night of laughs

Comedian Zane Lamprey is bringing his Ski Patrol Comedy Tour to both Santa Fe Brewing Co. and Boxing Bear Brewing Co. Corrales Taproom.

The 21+ over events start at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Santa Fe Brewing Co. and 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at Boxing Bear.
