'Low' COVID-19 risk: 2 deaths, 145 new cases on Cape Cod and Islands

In the March 16, 2023 weekly update, the state Department of Public Health reported that Barnstable County posted 135 new coronavirus cases. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) reported seven new coronavirus cases. Nantucket County had three.

The new case numbers show an increase from last week in Barnstable County, which had 124 news cases reported a week ago and an increase on Martha's Vineyard, which had six new cases reported one week ago. Case numbers on Nantucket decreased from four cases a week ago.

The state’s 14-day positivity rate of people who were tested for the virus was 5.01%, which is lower than a week ago (5.84%). The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 6.29%, lower than one week ago (6.37%), and 3.36% for Dukes and Nantucket counties, which is lower than one week ago (3.58%).

COVID hospitalizations on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 13 patients with coronavirus, with none in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported four patients, with one in the ICU.

Barnstable County posted two new deaths. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the County Community risk level in Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties is low. The risk level helps convey how much COVID-19 is affecting a community using data on hospitalizations and cases.
