A child was stabbed to death and a teenager was injured in Paterson, New Jersey, on Saturday morning; CBS2's Cory James reports.
CORY JAMES: And Paterson police detectives, along with the Passaic County prosecutor's office, are still investigating this double stabbing. But this is what we know so far. Around 7:00 this morning, police were called out to this address, 96 North Sixth Street, for a report of a stabbing on the third floor of this home. They tell us when they arrived, they found two children, a seven-year-old and 17-year-old, inside the home with stab wounds. Both victims were taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center, and that is where the seven-year-old child died from injuries, according to authorities.
We spoke with neighbors who are devastated by what happened, one man telling us he saw the youngest child on the ground being worked on by paramedics.
ERNESTO RODRIGUES: I saw the little boy, you know, just laying there. And I was like, wow, I've never seen something like that. You know, a kid, small kid, seven-year-old, you know, full of blood, just laying there. And then the ambulance, they're just trying to give him CPR and everything, you know, trying to help him out. But I guess it was too late for him.
CORY JAMES: And another neighbor told us that very young kid who died was just playing outside with her grandkids days ago. We've learned the teenager was treated and later released from the hospital. Right now, it is unclear, though, the connection between the two victims, the motive for the violent attacks, and who stabbed them. But the Passaic County assistant prosecutor did tell us more information is expected to be released tonight regarding this double stabbing. Of course, as we learn those details, we'll bring that information right to you. In Paterson, New Jersey, Cory James, CBS 2 News.
