7 summer weekend events near Bradenton: Yoga with manatees, fashion show, volleyball

It’s officially summer, and with that comes the heat and rain in Bradenton and Sarasota.

But don’t fret. Summertime also brings a bunch of family-friendly events to enjoy that will keep everyone cool.

There are many things to do this weekend as competition heats up for The Sunshine State Outdoor Volleyball Association’s Coquina Beach tournament in Bradenton.

Other highlights this weekend include Gentle Yoga with Manatees at the Bishop and the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Foundation’s annual fashion show.

SOVAA Coquina Beach Volleyball

The Sunshine State Outdoor Volleyball Association is hitting Florida’s best beaches to put on amateur beach volleyball tournaments, and the next stop is Coquina Beach in Bradenton.

On Saturday, junior volleyball pairs will take the sand and compete for a $1,000 scholarship pot, and adult teams will compete for a portion of $2,200. First place wins $600, second place $300, and third place $100.

Back by Popular Demand Fashion and Comedy show

This Saturday Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Foundation host it annual comedy and fashion show at the Manatee Preforming Art Center in Bradenton.

The annual event created by NFL star and Bradenton native Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a night of glitz, more glam and laughter as well as an opportunity to shop from local business vendors.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Manatee County Blitz organization which is committed to helping local athletes reach new goals and become active community members.

Yoga with Manatees

The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature will host Gentle Yoga with Manatees this weekend.

The manatees cared for at the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat will serve as a tranquil backdrop as guests engage in yoga poses focused on balance, flexibility and strength.

The group size is limited to 15 people and advance registration is required. Kids Ages 7 and up are welcome.

Yoga In The Galleries

Saturday Bring your own yoga mat and find your zen at the Sarasota Museum.

A 50-minute yoga session will be held at the Sarasota Museum at Ringling College of Art and Design.

Guests are invited to move their bodies and become at peace with their inner spirit. Guests are encouraged to tap into their creative minds and self-expression and meditate, doodle, draw and write during the artful yoga experience.

One Night Rodeo

The return of Joyland’s One Night Rodeo will happen this Saturday. Grab your cowboy hats and get there by 6:30 for a lesson in line dancing. Music by DJ Trevor will start at 9 p.m.

Laughter in the Limelight comedy show

This Saturday, comedian Thomas Brown will take the stage at The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime/Hamlet’s Eatery in Sarasota for a clean stand-up comedy show.

Guests are encouraged to get there at 5 p.m. as the door opens to order food. There will be dinner and drinks served in the courtyard.

A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to Make-a-Wish Southern Florida.

Midsummer’s Day Celebration

The Children’s Garden and Art center is celebrating the official start of summer this weekend.

Celebration schedule:

  • 10:15 a.m. - Come to the stage to listen to the story “Rainbow Fairies” and make your own tambourine shaker to wake up the weefolk of the Garden.

  • 10:45 a.m. - Winnie the Pooh story titled “The Friendship Garden” and plant sunflower seeds.

  • 11:30 a.m. - Build and decorate fairy houses with nature materials.

This event is included in the cost of admission and free for garden members while supplies last.

Farmers’ markets

Downtown Bradenton Public Market: This weekly market is a community gathering place that welcomes vendors offering fresh local produce, meat, pantry and home goods, packaged foods, plants, clothing, accessories and more.

Food, drink and dessert vendors make the market a great place to grab a tasty snack.

This year, the market is nearly doubling in size with plans to host about 100 vendors each week, including a core group of businesses and some rotating selections, organizers say.

The market also features live music performances from different regional artists each week. Kid’s activities, special events and cooking demonstrations add to the fun throughout the season.

The Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch welcomes more than 90 regional vendors to Waterside Place each Sunday. Offerings include produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods and breads, crafts, jewelry, plants and pet treats. Live music from a rotation of local musicians and yoga sessions are another regular feature at the market.

Oneco Farmers Market is open seven days a week. The permanent market boasts more than 100 vendors in one location, including meats and seafood, fresh produce, sweets and treats. There are also restaurants and arts and crafts vendors to check out, and the market frequently hosts free community events.

Newtown Sarasota Farmers Market offers local produce, fresh-baked goods and other items twice a week in the Newtown neighborhood. The market also hosts community gatherings including events for kids and food festivals.

Performing arts and shows

“The Surfer Boys” at Florida Studio Theatre: Four Broadway veterans will perform the sweet harmony of one of America’s most iconic pop groups, the Beach Boys. Cruise down memory lane as the group sings Classic songs like “California Girls,” “Good Vibrations,” “Barbara Ann,” “Surfin’ USA,” and many more.

Tickets to this show have sold out for this weekend.

“Shear Madness” at Florida Studio Theatre: Interactive theater with a mysterious twist — there has been a murder at a local hair salon, and audience members have found out whodunit. Buy your tickets and become immersed in the interactive show.
