7 things to do in the Canandaigua area this week

You can tell it’s spring, according to the calendar, anyway. But many activities this week will either get you outdoors or prepare you for when you do.

If you like birds and birding, or want to learn how to do it, programs are scheduled at Finger Lakes Community College and Victor Farmington Library.

The always popular Maple Weekends concludes this weekend. Several participating Rochester-area maple locations offer opportunities to learn more about making syrup, tastings and other fun activities.

Maple Weekends are back, and in this file photo, Chris and Hayden Schoff, of Schoff's Sugar Shack in Victor, do their part.

Sweet tooth satisfied, here are more things to do this week:

1. Birding for Beginners

This Victor Farmington Library program features Chris Lajewski, who is director of the Montezuma Audubon Center. Enjoy this introduction to birding 6 p.m. March 21 at the library, 15 W. Radiotracking the Baltimore oriole and other migratory songbirds is the subject of an FLCC talk March 23.
Radiotracking the Baltimore oriole and other migratory songbirds is the subject of an FLCC talk March 23.

Mark Deutschlander, who is a professor of biology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will present on the topic at 6 p.m. March 23 at Finger Lakes Community College Muller Field Station, 6455 County Road 36. Deutschlander teaches courses about physiology, ornithology, and migration at the Geneva colleges. While tracking technologies allow researchers to learn where birds go, these technologies also can provide detailed knowledge about the pace of migration and the evolutionary trade-offs in migration. Several case studies will help illustrate the impacts of new tracking technologies, particularly radiotracking.

3. Wayne's Wildflowers

Join Mark De Cracker for a presentation on Wayne's Wildflowers, at 6:30 p.m. March 21 at Lyons Community Center, 9 Manhattan St., Newark. De Cracker will share pictures of the wildflowers in Wayne County he's photographed. The presentation is free.
