7 things to do in the Canandaigua area this week

Can you have your cake and eat it, too? This week you can.

Dasha Kelly will perform a spoken-word performance of “Makin’ Cake.” Kelly has released four spoken-word recordings, written two novels, and appeared on Russell Simmons' “Def Poetry Jam.”

She hosts live storytelling events for “The Moth” and is an internationally traveled speaker. In 2021, she was named poet laureate of Wisconsin and was selected as Artist of the Year by the City of Milwaukee.

And that's just one night!

Anyone with a bit of extra time on their hands – and there may be a few with Presidents Week break and all – can enjoy a host of activities this week, everything from old movies and old games in Geneva, enjoying the outdoors and learning more about the natural environment in Naples, and exploring what New York has to offer when it comes to food and drink, in both Canandaigua and Geneva.

1. ‘Makin’ Cake’ in Canandaigua

The Fort Hill Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua is the venue for Dasha Kelly and her live performance of “Makin’ Cake,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

“Makin’ Cake” is a spoken word performance that slices into American history exploring race, culture and class. Refreshing and fun, “Makin’ Cake” leaves room for dessert and dialogue with a cake reception immediately following the performance. Jazz artist Connie Fredericks Malone of Canandaigua will be in the supporting cast as one of two onstage bakers.

2. 1920s Game Days in Geneva

The Geneva History Museum will play host to participants who want to learn card and board games while watching silent films during the program, 1920s Game Days, from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Experienced Mahjongg players will be available to help newcomers at this game table.

If you can’t make it Tuesday, no problem. The event repeats from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. A donation of $5 is suggested as admission to the museum, 543 S. Main St., Geneva.

3. Every Family Outside in Naples

This fun outdoorsy event will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Cumming Nature Center in Naples. This winter walk and nature exploration event is best suited for those 14 and under and their families. The program is a partnership between the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association and Finger Lakes Land Trust.

4. Hemlock woolly adelgid workshop in Canandaigua

Also, on Feb. 25 at Cumming Nature Center, learn more about this invasive forest pest preying on hemlock trees and treatment options. The program runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and is free for Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association members. Cost is $9 for those who are not.

5. Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market

The Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market runs from 10-11 a.m. every other Saturday in the Antis Street lot in downtown Canandaigua.

The winter version of the Canandaigua Farmers Market runs every other Saturday and this week, it’s 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 25 in the Antis Street lot, off South Main Street, behind Frequentem Brewing Co. and across the street from V-Pub and Pizano's.

6. Roundtable of Antiques and Collectibles in Geneva

The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes will meet at 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Geneva History Museum, 543 S. Main St., Geneva. 

All attendees are invited to bring an antique or vintage items they would like to learn more about or simply discuss at this free meeting, which is open to all. The discussion will include knowledgeable antiques club members and antiques dealer Christina Champion of Christina's Antiques, in business since 1979.

7. Taste NY turns 10 with celebration in Geneva

Enjoy craft beverage tastings, food sampling, cooking demonstrations, activities for children and more for this 10th anniversary celebration, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center, 35 Lakefront Drive, Geneva.

The Taste NY program has highlighted the quality, diversity, and economic impact of food and beverages grown, produced, or processed in New York.
