71-year-old woman found dead after fire fully engulfed East Manatee trailer home

A Duette woman died in a trailer home fire in East Manatee County on Sunday, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The home was located off of Revell Road, north of Taylor Grade Road.

Surrounding neighbors reported the blaze on Sunday morning, which they first took for a brush fire, Duette Fire Rescue Chief Rocky Parker said. Duette Fire Rescue responded around 11:54 a.m., with assistance from Parrish Fire District.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed, and a female victim was found dead inside.

The victim was later identified as 71-year-old Sheryll R. Johnson, the sheriff’s office said.

“In a rural area, response times are longer, and it doesn’t take long for a trailer to engulf, unfortunately,” Parker said. “Our hearts go out to them.”

Three engines and two tankers responded and put out the blaze. No other buildings were impacted.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the state fire marshal’s office were called in to investigate the death, Parker said.

The fire appears accidental and there were no signs of foul play, sheriff’s office spokesperson Randy Warren said in an email Monday.

An autopsy confirmed that the death was a direct result of the fire, Warren said.
