72-year-old Lakeland man dies after pickup crashes into tow truck on Swindell Road

A 72-year-old Lakeland man was died Wednesday after crashing into a tow truck that was backing up at the Lakeland Wrecker business on Swindell Road.

Lakeland police said in a news release that the accident happened about 8:30 a.m. when a tow truck driven by Shane Wiseman, 48, of Lakeland was backing out of the property at 2915 Swindell Road. Police said the truck had its amber strobe lights and backing tone activated. While the tow truck was in the roadway, a maroon 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Glen Gilbreath was traveling eastbound and crashed into the passenger side of the tow truck.

Lakeland police, Polk County Fire Rescue and the Lakeland Fire Department arrived on the scene and began life-saving measures. Gilbreath was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where he died shortly after.

Wiseman suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention. The road was shut down for about three hours during the investigation.
