74 Kittens, Cats Rescued By Somerset Regional Animal Shelter

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — There has been an explosion of cuteness at the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter as they have just taken in 72 cats and kittens this week.

Among the rescued cats, the shelter took in 32 cats from Atlantic County on Tuesday and another 12 from Bergen County on Thursday, SRAS Manager Brian Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw noted the influx in kittens and cats is due to the time of year or sometimes called "kitten season" and also some shelters, such as Bergen County, that are not allowed to reopen amid the coronavirus.

About 25 of the kittens and cats are already available for adoption. Adoptions are by appointment only due to social distancing rules.

An appointment is set up to meet the pet outside the shelter, located at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater. There is no contact and shelter volunteers use masks and gloves. Those interested in a cat can take the cat home for a week to get to know their personality before making a decision for adoption. To see the animals up for adoption or to fill out a pre-adoption form visit srasnj.org/adoptions.

Bradshaw said some of the cats are already being lined up to be fostered to help care for all of their needs.

"We want to help out everyone," Bradshaw said of working to help other New Jersey shelters. "But we need the community to help us to continue to help the cats and dogs, of course. The only way to continue to do this is with the continued support from the community."

The shelter, which runs on donations, is in need of cat food and supplies and monetary donations. Community members can contribute by purchasing supplies from the shelter's Amazon Wishlist or to make a monetary donation visit srasnj.org/donate.
