Coroner identifies Sherman man on riding mower who died Tuesday after being hit by a truck

Officials have identified a man who was killed Tuesday afternoon when his riding mower was struck by a semi truck on Illinois 124 near Sherman.

The Sangamon County Coroner's Office said Darrell "Al" Sample, 74, of Sherman was pronounced dead by staff at HSHS St. John's Hospital at 3:08 p.m. Tuesday.

Illinois State Police said Sample was mowing grass on the west side of the road when he attempted to cross it. He was hit by the semi, which was heading south toward Sherman. The driver, Joseph Cloyd, 47, of Loami, attempted to swerve out of the way of the mower, but couldn't avoid a collision.

Officials closed the road from Suddeth Street to Holton Street shortly after the accident in order to allow Sample to be transported by EMS to St. John's. Cloyd was uninjured in the accident.

An autopsy revealed that Sample died from blunt force injuries caused by the collision. The coroner's office and state troopers are investigating the accident.
