75 poignant war photos in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day
160,000 allied troops. 5,000 ships, 13,000 aircrafts, 5,300 tons of bombs and an estimated 10,000 Allied deaths in just 24 hours.
June 6th marks the 75th anniversary of what has been considered the biggest turning point of World War II. D-Day, which took place on this day in 1944, saw the biggest land and seaborne invasion in history. General Dwight D. Eisenhower commanded the operation over a 50-mile stretch in Normandy, which was deemed Operation Overlord by the allies and had been in the works by Churchill and Roosevelt since 1942.
"The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory.... We will accept nothing less than full victory!" Eisenhower told the troops before the historic day.
On Thursday, world leaders gathered on Omaha Beach in France to commemorate the watershed of an operation.
“To more than 170 veterans of the Second World War who join us today – you are among the very greatest Americans who will ever live," Trump said in a speech alongside French president Emmanuel Macron and other leaders. "You are the pride of our nation. You are the glory of our republic. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
