757Teamz wrestling Top 15: Granby continues unbeaten start, Great Bridge rolls again

Granby’s breakout season continued with a 5-0 record at the Billy Martin Duals last weekend.

The Comets posted wins over Gloucester, King’s Fork, Salem and No. 11 Nansemond River in the first-place match.

Granby (8-0) has scored at least 45 points in each dual this season.

King’s Fork (6-1) joins the rankings this week with a strong showing at that tournament, its only loss coming to No. 8 Granby.

At the Colon E. Baker Classic, Great Bridge cruised to the title with 286 points, which was more than 70 points clear of James Robinson, a perennial contender in Class 6.

The 126-pound class has become claustrophobic with four wrestlers vying for the No. 3 and No. 4 spot in the individual rankings. Great Bridge’s Will Marsh, Kempsville’s Joseph Custodio, Peninsula Catholic’s Thomas Montgomery and Poquoson’s Bryan Latta have taken turns defeating one another.

Montgomery won the Colon E. Baker title over Marsh by a 6-4 margin after falling to Latta 8-4 in the earlier rounds. Marsh pinned Latta in the semifinals and holds a win over Custodio in a Dec. 3 tournament. Custodio topped Montgomery in that one 12-10.

At 157, No. 3 Aaron Turner (Great Bridge) knocked off No. 1 Jaden Campos (Ocean Lakes) 8-7 in the final.

Third-ranked Cox won the 31-team NOVA Classic with heavyweight Graydon Howard winning the team’s lone title. Carter Shupert (144), Parker Tillery (157), Tyler Haley (165) and Rudy Wagner (175) were runners-up.
