76-year-old speeds away from crash with other driver clinging to hood, Florida cops say

A Florida woman is accused of trying to flee the site of a crash with another driver hanging onto the hood of her car.

A 76-year-old woman was involved in a “minor vehicle crash” with one other vehicle in Palm Coast on Sept. 30, according to an Oct. 3 news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman refused to stop and get out of her car to speak with the other driver, deputies said.

The other driver used their vehicle to block the woman’s escape as she tried to drive away, according to the release.

The other driver then got out of their vehicle and approached the woman, who responded by hitting the gas, deputies said.

Her vehicle lunged toward the other driver, who, in order to avoid being run over, jumped up and onto the hood of the woman’s car, according to the release.

The woman then “sped away” from the crash site with the other driver still onto the hood of her car, deputies said.

“If you get in a car crash, the last thing you want to do is run,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the release. “Just take the insurance premium hike with dignity and face the consequences.”

The other driver later told deputies the woman drove onto a major parkway, reaching estimated speeds of 50 miles per hour, while they clung to the front of the car, according to the release.

A third driver, not involved with the crash, saw what was happening and forced the woman off the road with their vehicle, deputies said.

The other driver was able to get off the woman’s car unscathed, according to the release.

“This could have become a deadly incident,” Staly said “Never hit another person with a car.”

The woman was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, deputies said.

“She should never be allowed to touch a steering wheel again,” the sheriff said.

Palm Coast is about 60 miles south of Jacksonville.
