A Des Moines man was killed after being struck by a vehicle Thursday, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Jack Waters, 77, was walking eastbound across NE 14th Street at about 6:49 p.m. Thursday when he was struck by a 2007 Chevy Tahoe on the 5000 block of the street on Des Moines' northeast side, according to a news release.

First responders, including medics from the Saylor Township Fire Department, attempted life-saving measures on Waters but were unsuccessful, according to the release.

Authorities say the driver of the Chevy Tahoe remained on the scene and has been cooperative with investigators. The investigation is ongoing.
