  • The Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday.

  • The ceremony was attended by celebrities including Michelle Yeoh and Ana de Armas.

  • While some celebrities pulled off daring outfits, others opted for ensembles that fell flat.

Rooney Mara's cream-colored dress gave off a Grecian aesthetic, but looked washed out on the red carpet and featured a clumsy-looking train.

Rooney Mara's tulle-heavy, off-the-shoulder dress was designed by Alexander McQueen, according to Harper's Bazaar. She accessorized with two choker necklaces and a pair of silver stilettos.

While Mara's gown looked ethereal, the color of the outfit did not pop against the beige carpet at the 2023 Oscars. If she'd opted for a different color of the dress and taken the train out of its knot, her Oscars ensemble definitely could've hit the mark.

Allison Williams wore what looked like a completely separate dress on top of her Giambattista Valli couture gown, which took away from how stunning it was.

Allison Williams wore a diamond-encrusted Giambattista Valli couture gown, according to an Instagram post shared by veteran celebrity stylist Cristina Ehrlich. The dress, which also featured a feather lining at the bottom, was then layered under a massive tulle-lined bubblegum-pink jacket.

The jacket looked as if it could have been a stunning dress in its own right. Overall, Williams' ensemble came across as a bit too much. In this case, less could've been more.

Ariana DeBose's lilac embellished Versace gown looked washed out on the beige carpet and could've worked better in a different color.

Ariana DeBose's style duo Zadrian Smith and Sarah Edmiston, who go by ZadrianandSarah on social media, shared that her gown was custom-designed by Versace prior to the 2023 Oscars.

In an interview with Marie Claire, DeBose said the look paid homage to the 1930s and 1940s but with a "modernized" twist.

But like other celebrities who opted for lighter dresses, the lilac color of the gown paired with the sheer train simply did not pop on the beige carpet the way it would've if it had been red. It could've been worth changing the color of the dress to make more of a statement.

Zoë Saldana's lace-paneled gown looked slightly too understated for one of the biggest nights in Hollywood.

Zoë Saldana's stylist Petra Flannery shared on Instagram that her lace off-white gown was designed by Fendi. She paired the dress with a silky cream clutch and Cartier jewelry.

The dress was beautiful and boho-like. However, given the formality of the Oscars, it simply felt too understated. Saldana's gown would've been much better suited for a less prestigious red carpet.

Ana de Armas's grey Louis Vuitton featured all-around embellishing but didn't shine the way it could have.

Ana de Armas told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet that her Louis Vuitton gown was inspired partly by Marilyn Monroe, who she was nominated for playing in "Blonde" at the 2023 Oscars.

"It's a little bit of a silhouette of Marilyn and the 1950s and then the beautiful train with petals," de Armas said. "She is always the inspiration."

While de Armas's dress hit the nail on the head when it came to honoring Monroe, the structure of the mermaid train didn't highlight how delicate and beautiful the petals were. And just like other attendees, the color of the dress didn't suit the beige carpet.

Dwayne Johnson's salmon-pink tuxedo jacket would've been a total win in a different material.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson told Entertainment Tonight that his look consisted of a ballet-pink Dolce & Gabbana suit jacket. He also said he wore a flower on his lapel in honor of his daughters, Simone Johnson, Jasmine Johnson, and Tiana Johnson.

Johnson's outfit was a refreshing departure from the overdone classic tuxedo. However, the silky material the jacket was made from looked a bit crinkled when photographed. If he'd opted for a different material, the ensemble would've hit the mark.

The asymmetrical structure of Elizabeth Banks' dress took away from its elegance and made it look lopsided.

Erin Walsh, the stylist for Elizabeth Banks, shared on Instagram that the "Cocaine Bear" director's gown was custom-designed by Vivienne Westwood. She also noted that her jewelry was Pomellato, an Italian brand that makes handcrafted contemporary pieces.

The top half of Banks's gown was elegant, but when the white skirt was introduced as well as the oversized bow tie at the back, everything began to look slightly mismatched. If the dress had been all black or slightly more symmetrical in design, it would've done her more justice.

Laverne Cox's black-and-turquoise Vera Wang gown could've hit the mark without the bodice.

Laverne Cox shared several photographs and videos on Instagram from her night at the 2023 Oscars and credited her ensemble to Vera Wang.

In some of the clips, her gown appears to work seamlessly from the back. But from the front, the tan bodice beneath the turquoise fabric just doesn't work as well. Either removing it entirely or making it black to match the rest of the dress would've elevated the look.
