Radio DJ killed, over 20 injured in shooting near Chiefs Super Bowl rally

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City radio DJ was killed Wednesday in a shooting near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally at Union Station, officials say.

At the conclusion of the rally, there were shots fired west of Union Station near the garage and several people were struck, a KCPD spokesperson said. The shooting happened near West Pershing and Kessler roads.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed one person died and over 20 people were injured by gunfire.

KCPD has set up a tips line for people who witnessed the shooting incident, has any video or was a victim of the shooting who hasn’t yet reported being shot to call (816) 413-3477.

Local radio station KKFI said DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano, was killed in the shooting.

“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family,” the station wrote on Facebook.

“We encourage anyone who feels they saw something to reach out to law enforcement at 816-234-5111. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”

Patients were transported to University Health, St. Luke’s and Children’s Mercy Hospital, officials said.

St. Luke’s confirmed it has one critical patient and three walk-in patients with minor injuries, not gunshot related. University Health said it has eight shooting victims, including two in critical condition, and four other patients who were injured but not shot.

Children’s Mercy said it has 12 patients, and 11 are children. Nine of those patients have gunshot wounds. All of them are expected to recover.

Including gunshot victims and other injuries, nearly 30 people were injured in the shooting, according to information from hospital officials.

Graves was not able to provide an age range for the victims at this time.

Two armed people were initially arrested, police said, and later Wednesday, Graves updated that a third person is now in custody.

Detectives are working to figure out if one of those three people is the same one reportedly chased down by some fans to assist police.

Graves said they have recovered at least one firearm from the scene. She did not have any information on a motive for the shooting.

Police said everyone has been cleared from Union Station, and the building is currently closed to the public.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas released the following statement:

“I am heartbroken for our community. As thousands gathered under bright skies today, the horrific acts of a few brought tragedy to us all.

“While many of us ran for safety, law enforcement and first responders ran toward danger to protect all of us. I am grateful for their courage and service to the people of Kansas City.

“This is difficult for our community. We will continue to work hard to ensure assailants are brought to justice, our victims receive exceptional care, all families impacted receive our support and that we as a city and country do all we can to prevent tragedies like this from ever occurring again.”
