8-year-old boy struck and killed by school bus in New Square

An 8-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus Monday evening in New Square, according to Ramapo police.

Police Lt. Blaine Howell said the boy was walking home from school shortly before 6 p.m. when he was hit by the bus near the intersection of Clinton Lane and Stern Street.

Howell said EMS workers were the first to arrive at the scene, where the child was pronounced dead. The driver of the bus stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police.

"It can be traumatic for the officers to respond but we do have a wellness team of peer support officers who are here for them if they need anything and will often do a debrief for them after the fact," Howell said.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Ramapo Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
