PORT ST. JOHN — An 8-year-old Cocoa boy was critically injured Friday afternoon when he rode his bicycle into oncoming traffic at a Port St. John intersection and was struck by an SUV, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Saturday.

The boy, whose identity was not disclosed, was riding his bicycle on Barbara Road in Port St. John toward its intersection with Ackerman Avenue at about 2:20 p.m. Friday, and didn't stop at the stop sign, troopers said.

He then rode into the path of a 2021 Toyota Highlander and was hit by the front end of the SUV, troopers said. The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando with "critical, but stable injuries," FHP said.

The SUV's driver, a 59-year-old Cocoa woman, and passenger, a 9-year-old Cocoa boy, were uninjured.
