8 people wounded when gunmen open fire at Burnside party; 1 killed, more than two dozen injured in weekend gun violence

Eight people were wounded in a shooting at a party early Sunday morning in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side, according to the Chicago Police Department.

About 4 a.m., several gunmen approached guests who were gathered on a sidewalk, on a patio and in a doorway at 89th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and opened fire, police said.

There were more than 40 bullet casings found on the scene from different calibers including 9 mm, .40-caliber and rifle rounds, police said. There were as many as three suspects and possibly a silver car involved in the shooting, police said. No detailed descriptions of the suspects were available.

The victims went to at least four hospitals: University of Chicago Medical Center, Stroger Hospital and Advocate Trinity Hospital, all of which are in Chicago, and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Six people were in serious to critical condition, and two were in fair to good condition, officials said.

The victims range in age from 28 to 38 years old, and they were shot in various parts of the body, police said.

In other shootings in Chicago over the weekend, one person was fatally wounded and more than two dozen people have been injured since Saturday morning, police said.

The latest fatal attack was Saturday afternoon in the West Englewood neighborhood in the 6400 block of South Hoyne Avenue. A 26-year-old man was approached by an unknown vehicle and an occupant inside fired shots, officials said.

The man had shots in the chest, hip and neck, and was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital, police said.

In other shootings:

  • A 24-year-old man was shot in the foot and leg at a party in the 3300 block of West Walnut Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police. The man self-transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in good condition, police said.

  • Two men, 29 and 24, were sitting in a parked car in the 4100 block of West Adams Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood around 7:20 a.m. Sunday when occupants in an unknown vehicle fired shots, police said. The 29-year-old man was hit in the foot, and the 24-year-old man had a graze wound to the head, police said. The men drove to Rush University Medical Center and are in good condition, officials said.

  • A 31-year-old man was dropped off at West Suburban Medical Center in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the right arm around 4:20 a.m. Sunday, according to police. He was transferred to Stroger Hospital, and details are unknown at this time, police said.

  • A 33-year-old man was shot by an occupant in a black sedan while walking in the 200 block of West 63rd Street in the Englewood neighborhood around 4:45 a.m., police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is in fair condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, officials said.

  • A 23-year-old man driving a car west on North Western Avenue was shot in the leg around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police. He drove to Humboldt Park Health and was transferred to Stroger Hospital in good condition, police said.

  • A 42-year-old man was shot in the leg while walking in the 4200 block of South King Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. He was transported by the Fire Department to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, according to officials.

  • Two men, 25 and 30, were shot on the sidewalk in the 300 block of West 59th Street in the Englewood neighborhood around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to police. The 30-year-old man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the back and buttocks, police said. The 25-year-old man was also taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the abdomen, police said.

  • An unidentified man was shot in the 200 block of North Wabash Avenue in the Loop neighborhood around 2 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by the Chicago Fire Department in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the back. Police said details of the shooting are unknown.

  • A 26-year-old man was shot in the hand while walking in the 1800 block of West 44th Street in the Back of the Yards community around 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police. He was dropped off at Stroger Hospital in good condition, officials said.

  • An occupant in a dark-colored SUV shot a 32-year-old man in the leg in the 1800 block of West Addison Street in the North Center neighborhood at 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition, according to officials.

  • A 32-year-old man was shot in the arm in the 9100 block of South Throop Street in the Brainerd neighborhood when an occupant in a silver-colored sedan fired shots around 11 p.m. Saturday, according to police. The man was dropped off at St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, police said.

  • The Chicago Fire Department transported a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg from the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood to Mount Sinai Hospital around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. According to officials, the man would not give further details on the shooting.

  • A 34-year-old man was standing on a rear porch when an occupant in a dark-colored sedan fired shots from the alley in the 5200 block of South Michigan Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police. He was shot in the leg, police said. The Chicago Fire Department took the man to University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.

  • Around 6 p.m. Saturday in the 9800 block of South Lowe Avenue in the Longwood Manor neighborhood, two women, 20 and 46, were shot near the front of a residence, according to police. The 20-year-old was hit in the chest and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. The 46-year-old woman was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.

  • A 28-year-old man was shot in the back near the 6500 block of South Carpenter Street in the Englewood neighborhood shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, officials said.

  • In the 6600 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood, at 6 p.m. Saturday, a man, 26, was on the sidewalk when he was approached by an unknown offender who fired shots, striking the man in the back and hand, police said. He was transported to University of Chicago Hospital in good condition, police said.

  • Shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 6600 block of South Oakley Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was self-transported to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said.

  • A 29-year-old man was at a bus stop in the 5900 block of South California Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when an offender in a gray vehicle fired shots, hitting the man in the foot, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, and two nearby vehicles also sustained damage, officials said.

  • Around 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the 6200 block of South Eberhardt Street in Glenwood, a 30-year-old woman was parking her car when a black Dodge Charger, which had been following the woman, pulled beside her car and fired shots, police said. She suffered six gunshot wounds and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and is in stable condition, police said.

  • Two people were shot at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of South Kirkland Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood, according to police. A 24-year-old man was sleeping in his bed when shots fired from outside went through the wall and hit him twice in the leg, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, the Fire Department said. The second person, a 25-year-old man, was walking down Kirkland Avenue when he was shot in the upper thigh, police said. He transported himself to Stroger Hospital and was reported in good condition, officials said.

  • A 17-year-old boy was caught in gunshot crossfire while he was sitting on a porch it the 4100 block of West 21st Place in the Lawndale neighborhood around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. He was struck in the arm and taken by a relative to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police.

  • A 31-year-old woman was shot in the leg it the 6000 block of North Lincoln Avenue in the Peterson Park neighborhood around 3 a.m. Saturday, according to officials. She was taken by the Chicago Fire Department to St. Francis Hospital in good condition, officials said. Police said the woman was intoxicated and could not remember details of the shooting, and there are no witnesses.
