SANTA CRUZ, CA -- MAY 08: The Beach Boardwalk is closed to guests as a couple walks along an empty Main Beach on Friday, May 8, 2020, in Santa Cruz, CA. As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Santa Cruz County continue to rise the City of Santa Cruz is taking necessary precautionary efforts to contain the spread of this virus and mitigate its impact. City of Santa Cruz beaches will be closed from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily until further notice. The ocean will remain open for water sports (e.g., surfing, boogie-boarding, swimming, paddle-boarding, kayaking, boating, etc.), and individuals may cross beaches in order to access and leave the ocean. All other non-exercise, passive, or sedentary activities at beaches, such as sitting, lying, standing, picnicking, etc, are prohibited. Santa Cruz County, home of the idyllic seaside town of Santa Cruz, has reported 141 coronavirus cases and two deaths.

Neighboring Santa Clara County to the east has been hit harder by the virus. The county has reported 2,339 cases and 129 deaths. Our statewide coronavirus tracker includes the status of counties throughout California.
