8 things to do in the Canandaigua area this week

With all due apologies to Punxsutawney Phil, spring really is in the air come March 1, not Groundhog Day.

Daylight Saving Time is less than a week away and folks are making plans for St. Patrick’s Day. More proof of the transition from winter to spring can be seen with garden-related activities beginning to sprout up. It’s almost time to dig in the dirt but before you do, you may have some questions that some experts are more than happy to answer for you this week.

But if thinking about the garden is too early for you, there ae more things to do in the Canandaigua area this week, including a church celebration a long time in the making.

1. Gardening questions answered

The master and experienced members of the Bloomfield Garden Club will be able to answer question during this panel discussion 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at Veterans Park, 6910 state Routes 5 and 20, East Bloomfield. Coffee will be served.

2. Care of African violets workshop

You know the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County is getting busy. This workshop, which will be led by Master Gardener Susie Nettleton, is 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the extension office, 480 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Participants will learn the basics of African violet care, how to repot an African violet that has outgrown a pot, start one from a leaf, and gain an understanding of the different types. Bring one or two African violets that need repotting or dividing. All supplies will be provided for repotting. Fee is $10 per family. 3. Bloomfield Lions Club spaghetti dinner

Dinner, which includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and ice cream, will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Veterans Park American Legion, 6910 state Routes 5 and 20, East Bloomfield. Cost is $10; $5 for ages 12 and under.

4. Victor village community blood drive

Victor is doing its part to help others. This blood drive will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Victor Town Hall, 85 E. Main St., Victor. Get a $10 Visa prepaid card by email and get a chance to win a $3,000 Visa prepaid card to help with gas or grocery expenses. If you have gardening on the mind this early in March, why not seek out a few tips from the vendors at the Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market, which is open from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

The old winter standby, the Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market, is open from 10 to 11 a.m. March 11 in the Antis Street lot, off South Main Street, behind Frequentem Brewing Co. and across the street from V-Pub and Pizano's. If you haven't been yet, make a point to -- only a few markets are left before the summer season kicks in.

6. Sign up for free St. Patrick’s Day dinner in Victor

Well, you have to register first for this Kiwanis Club of Farmington-Victor event and the deadline is Saturday, March 11. The corned beef and cabbage dinners can be picked up 1 to 4 p.m. March 18 at the Victor Senior High School bus loop, 953 High St., Victor. Call 585-433-5926, and leave a message with name, phone number and number of meals needed. This is a drive-thru event.

7. Irish Night fundraiser  in Canandaigua

The Ontario County Arts Council bash is scheduled from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at the Elks Club, 19 Niagara St., Canandaigua. Enjoy corned beef dinner, music by Almost Irish, Irish humor, raffle for themed baskets and a silent auction for Neal Allen’s framed pastel painting of “The Old Hop Kiln.” Cost is $25 per person; cash bar. Reservations are required at www.ocarts.org. Proceeds benefit the council’s scholarship and grant programs.

This is going back a few years, but work at the  First Congregational Church of Canandaigua centered on the bell tower. A celebration of more recent renovations is planned for Sunday.

The First Congregational Church of Canandaigua is celebrating the restoration of the church at 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua, and the community is invited. The eight-month restoration of the 210-year-old structure included work on windows and plaster/paint. Earlier restoration work had included the foundation and undercroft, and the bell tower. Festivities start at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 12. A reception will follow.
