Time travel: Calliope Poetry's 'Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past' exhibit is in Falmouth

Postcards, a mainstay souvenir that have remained throughout the decades, are the focus of Calliope Poetry's "Wish You Were Here" exhibition at the Falmouth Historical Society's Museums on the Green.

Inspired by the messages and imagery of the Falmouth Public Library's historical postcards, Calliope Poetry founding director Alice Kociemba decided to ask the public to respond to them. Those responses ranged from recollections of memories, new stories based on the card's images and even new images of what the postcard depicted. All of this along with the original postcards will be on display through May for museumgoers to see.

In honor of the exhibition, a reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Museums on the Green. For those interested in attending, the museum asks you to register online at www.museumsonthegreen.org/.

'Little Red Riding Hood' to take the stage at Academy Playhouse in Orleans

The age-old classic of “Little Red Riding Hood” is getting a makeover as Claudia Nygaard, a country musician from Nashville, debuts her children’s production of the famed fairytale with the Academy of Performing Arts on Oct. 7 and 8.

Nygaard’s musical adaptation of the story gives audiences a moral or two to come away with, altering the infamous ending to teach a lesson in admitting wrongdoings.

“She's changed the story slightly and in the end because you know, it's so nice to not eat the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood … in this one, he learns that he did the wrong thing, or was about to do the wrong thing and it's just very funny,” said Judy Hamer, artistic director for the Academy of Performing Arts.

Through songs and dances, the wolf — who Hamer said is sure to be a favorite among the kids in the audience — comes to better understand right from wrong, a valuable lesson for anyone big or small.

“He's just so darn funny,” Hamer said. “He acknowledges that he shouldn't try to eat people. He talks about that he understands, at the end, why people hate him because he eats their children. It's just ridiculous but you come away going like, ‘Oh, the poor guy.’”

For the actors who have just graduated from the land of make-believe and fairytales, Hamer said they’ve found fun in the silliness of it all and trying to navigate how to sing songs written by a country music star.

“The kids are just doing such a great job with it and having a lot of fun,” she said. “When they first heard the songs, they were like, ‘We can't sing that song’ and they were laughing and [wondering] how are we going to do this? …The kids have sort of made this their own musical and it's fun to see how they've progressed through the thing.”
