Shoppers across the Des Moines metro area will soon begin Christmas and holiday shopping and the perfect place to start is at Von Maur's new location that just opened at Jordan Creek Town Center. As the shopping center nears 100% capacity, Iowa's favorite homegrown retailer has taken up space in a smaller, but spacious location in the mall's wing near H&M.

On Monday afternoon, Von Maur closed its store at Valley West Mall that originally opened in 1976. By Tuesday afternoon, Von Maur opened its newly renovated space at Jordan Creek. Now the department store that got its start in Davenport in 1872 has 36 locations across 15 states.

Von Maur moved into a former 140,000-square-foot Younkers space at Jordan Creek Town Center after an extensive renovation. Younkers closed in 2018, part of the liquidation of Bon-Ton Holding Inc., the owner of that once-Des Moines-based department store chain.

The grand piano returns

The grand piano featuring rotating pianists returns from the retailer's Valley West Mall location and sits on the first floor of the Jordan Creek location alongside the escalators and elevator.

Home interior build-out section

A home interior build-out, the first of its kind in any Von Maur store, features freshly painted white walls, plush throw pillows, and big blankets. The build-out is located on the second floor of the new store near the children’s clothing section and a new snack shop.

Elevator near escalators at new location

In a departure from department store lore of days old, the glassy elevator at Von Maur's Jordan Creek Town Center is now wedged between the escalators instead of its former location near the customer service desk, according to the store's general manager Tricia Moeller.

Customer drive-up for online orders

Customers can pick up their online orders at a new drive-up, which was not available at Valley West Mall. Customers can place orders online and then receive their items from an associate at the customer drive-up. Most orders should be available within two hours. Online shopping has been popularized in recent years and major retailers have begun offering customer drive-up lanes or parking spots outside of brick-and-mortar locations.

Second floor near Junior's section features live wall

A mossy live wall featuring grass near a wood sign, with lettering that spells "Be Kind to Yourself," sits on a wall in the Junior's section on the store's second floor.

Toyland, featuring dozens of toys, takes center stage on second floor

The company's toy section, which the Iowa-based retailer has dubbed "Toyland," features dozens of toys in one area. Previously, toys have been scattered throughout the store instead of having a singular location in one area like Toyland at Jordan Creek Town Center.

Huge chandeliers hang from the ceilings

About five chandeliers hang from the ceilings in lounge areas and fitting rooms around the new store. The chandeliers accentuate the store's rooms, which feature sassy black-and-white wallpaper and furniture colors like teal.

Group fitting room for bridal parties, dress fittings

The largest women's fitting room, which now features a select room for bridal parties and dress fittings, sits on the building's first floor near the exterior mall entrance and the interior Jordan Creek entrance near H&M. The fitting room features 18 rooms and chandeliers hung from the ceilings.
