81-year-old Tybee Island resident dies from drowning

An 81-year-old Tybee resident died after drowning on Tybee Island near Guilick Street in the early afternoon on Thursday.

Just before noon Oct. 26, Tybee Island Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the area of North Beach, near the Gulick Street crossover in reference to a possible drowning, according to a news release on their Facebook page.

Witnesses reported spotting a man floating in the ocean, who didn't look like he was moving of his own will. After running to help and pulling the man from the water, they noticed that he was not breathing, nor did he have a pulse. The witnesses called 911 and began CPR.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released.
