A Maryland State Police spokesman said the crash, which was reported just before 2:20 p.m., occurred just south of the U.S. 40 interchange. He said there were no serious injuries, although he was not sure how many people were taken to the hospital.

He didn't have details on how the crash occurred.

The spokesman said at about 4 p.m. that he expected the southbound lanes to be closed for a couple more hours to give crews a chance to remove the three tractor-trailers and the vehicle.

Traffic cameras along Interstate 81 show traffic backed up in both directions. Southbound traffic is backed up into Pennsylvania. Northbound traffic is moving at a crawl that appears to be to the Potomac River bridge.
