Police identify 85-year-old pedestrian killed in Quincy

QUINCY − An 85-year-old pedestrian was killed by a vehicle in front of the 1000 Southern Artery senior apartment complex Wednesday morning, police said.

Quincy police said they received 911 calls reporting the crash at about 9:25 a.m.

Officers, firefighters and paramedics arrived moments later and attended to the victim, whom police identified as John Collins, 85, of Quincy.

He was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth and pronounced dead at 12:33 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle that hit him, a 63-year-old Quincy man, called 911 and remained at the scene, police said. No charges have been filed as of Thursday afternoon, police said.

South Street was closed from Southern Artery to Des Moines Road while the investigation was underway. The road was reopened later in the day.

"This crash remains under investigation by the Norfolk County district attorney's office and the Quincy Police Collision Reconstruction Unit," the news release says. "Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Quincy Police Department at 617-745-5824."
