86-year-old man killed by home health nurse who was picking him up at a Home Depot, deputies say

An 86-year-old man was hit by his home health nurse while she was picking him up at a Home Depot in West Boca Raton on Sunday, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The man later died in the hospital.

A little before 6 p.m. Sunday, Hermann Spiegel, a West Boca resident, was walking across a crosswalk in the parking lot at the store in the 9800 block of Glades Road. Meanwhile, Erika Wilson, 50, of Hallandale Beach, was driving her Hyundai Azera southbound in the parking lot before coming to a stop as she approached the crosswalk, according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.

Wilson was Spiegel’s home health care nurse, Teri Barbera, a spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, said in an email.

As Spiegal began to walk in front of the Azera, Wilson accelerated and struck him “for unknown reasons,” the release states, throwing him to the ground.

Spiegel was taken to Delray Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to the release. He died while under hospice care about 2:30 p.m. the next day.

Spiegel’s family declined to comment Tuesday.

Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the crash, Barbera said.
