87-year-old female passenger killed in crash on Route 7 Friday afternoon; 2 others injured

An 87-year-old woman has died following a crash on Route 7 near Pike Creek on Friday afternoon, Delaware State Police reported. A 20-year-old man and a 65-year-old man were both injured and taken to the hospital.

State police said a 20-year-old man from Wilmington was driving south in the left lane of Route 7 in a 2012 Nissan Rogue at 12:39 p.m. At the same time, a 65-year-old man and his passenger Marian Grimes were heading north on Route 7 in a 2013 Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla made a U-turn at Route 7 and Arundel Road, putting the car directly in the path of the Rogue. The 20-year-old driver attempted to brake, according to police, but the front left of his car hit the front right of the Corolla.

The drivers and Grimes were taken to Christiana Hospital, where Grimes later died. The 20-year-old was treated and released, police said, and the 65-year-old did not have life-threatening injuries.

Both cars had green lights at the time of the crash, according to state troopers, and neither was speeding. Route 7 was closed for three hours while police cleared the road.
