87-year-old man dies four days after Boynton Beach crash

BOYNTON BEACH — An 87-year-old man died Friday night, four days after a car crash in Boynton Beach left him with critical injuries.

On the afternoon of Sept. 18, Sherman Rogers was driving a Honda CR-V northbound in the left-turn lane at the intersection of Military Trail and Royal Palm Drive, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office media release. Meanwhile, Sophia-Rose Pontino, 20, was heading southbound on Military Trail in a Ford F150, approaching the intersection in the outside lane.

Rogers began to make a U-turn as Pontino approached, and the front of her F150 hit the back passenger side of Rogers’ vehicle, causing it to turn 180 degrees and roll backwards into the west shoulder, according to the release. Meanwhile, the F150 came to rest on the inside lane south of the intersection.

Rogers was transported to Delray Medical Center with critical injuries, while Pontino had minor injuries.

Four days later, Rogers died.
