88-year-old woman killed in head-on crash in Rome

An 88-year-old woman has died following a head-on vehicle crash on State Route 365 in Rome, New York State Police reported Monday.

Susan Caulfield, 72, of Schenectady, was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer the wrong way on the Downtown Rome exit ramp to Erie Boulevard when she hit a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Kelly Larrivey, 55, of Liverpool, police said.

State police: Trooper shot suspect who rammed vehicle, drove at officers

Marjorie Larrivey, 88, was a front-seat passenger in the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to Rome Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Kelly Larrivey was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Caulfield was not injured in the crash and tested negative for drug or alcohol impairment by a state police drug recognition expert.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Oneida Sheriff's Office and the Rome Fire Department. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
