89 Greater Alexandria Businesses Receive PIVOT Grant Funding

·4 min read

FORT HUNT, VA — Fairfax County Department of Economic Initiatives awarded more than $16 million in PIVOT Grant funding to 1,016 county businesses affected the by the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes 89 businesses in Fairfax County's Alexandria ZIP codes, including the Route 1 corridor, Franconia area and Lincolnia.

The grant funding was targeted to assist sectors that were most adversely affected by the pandemic. Grants ranging from $1,500 to $207,000 were awarded to business in the hotel, food service, retail and personal services, and arts and culture industries. Grant recipients reported their average loss of revenue between 2019 and 2020 was 40 percent.

"We know that the impacts to our community of this pandemic will last for years, that is why we have to continue to implement programs and opportunities to support our recovery and build a more resilient community," said Jeffrey McKay, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, in a release.

McKay went on to say that the goal of the Pivot grants was to help the businesses to weather current and future economic shocks.

"It's the key to future growth," he said. "In response we instituted a three-pronged approach to helping our small businesses — stabilization with the RISE grant and microloan programs, return to health with the PIVOT grants, and our next program, Fairfax THRIVE, will focus on growth and getting businesses to the next level."

PIVOT is the third business recovery program the county instituted to help businesses bounce back from the negative effects of the pandemic. Along with the Microloan program and the RISE Grant program, the county has distributed more than $70 million to the local business community.
