8th Grade Washington D.C. 2023 Trip Informational Meeting Coming Up

OSWEGO, IL — For the last 15 years, at least, Oswego eighth-graders take a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the country’s capital, see the sites and learn history. The trip was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but for the first time in two years this March, students and teachers embarked on the trip once more.

The 2022-23 school year will be no different. Kids will have the chance to go on the class trip happening during spring break — from Sunday, March 26 to Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Despite the fact the trip is about a year out, organizers are already in the throes of planning.

During the three-day trip, students will see major memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C, including the Washington National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Capitol Hill, among other noteworthy sites.

To learn more about next year's trip, parents with rising eighth-grade kids are invited to attend an information session Wednesday. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at Traughber Junior High School, 570 Colchester Drive. Organizers said the meeting will last no more than an hour.

District 308 officials don't promote the trip in school buildings, Marcia Carino and Mike Linden, two middle school teachers, told Patch. As a result, interested students and parents have to often seek out the information or learn about the trip through word-of-mouth. The two teachers, who teach at Traughber and Bednarcik Junior High, respectively, have been traveling with students to Washington, D.C. for more than 15 years, they said.

Some discounts and scholarships are available for those who sign up for the trip early, according to the teachers.

Additional information about the trip can be found by contacting Linden and Carino at oswegotodc@gmail.com.
