9-1-1 has been saved after its surprise cancellation, whilst spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star has also had its fate revealed.

As reported by Deadline, the flagship show from the franchise has been given a new lease of life by ABC after Fox cancelled it following the sixth season, whilst Lone Star will remain on Fox for its upcoming fifth season (also via Deadline).

In a statement confirming the move, Fox said: "It has been an honour to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to… the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox. We wish them well after 9-1-1’s final Fox season concludes."

Craig Erwich, the president of the Disney Television Group which owns ABC, was delighted to welcome the show to his network, saying: "Thanks to the creative drive of [the crew] as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons.

"We are honoured to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC. It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air," he added.

Lone Star, which features Rob Lowe and Liv Tyler in the lead roles, is currently in its fourth season, with showrunner Tim Minear recently explaining the return of Andy Favreau as Pearce Risher.

"We love Andy. He's just so funny. We had been talking about the idea of our medical team going up against a private ambulance company for a while," he said. "We also love [Adam Ray as Paragon boss Jacques], he's also hilarious.

"So we thought: 'What if we put these two obnoxious characters in the same world? What if Pearce was actually working for Paragon and for Jacques?'" he explained.

9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star both air on FOX and Hulu in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
