9/11: Treasure Coast memorials, commemorative events taking place on 22nd anniversary of attacks

The Treasure Coast will commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with special remembrance events across the tri-county area.

Martin County

September 11th Tribute

The Peter & Julie Cummings Library will host a candlelight vigil to honor the lives lost 22 years ago. There will be guest speakers, music and a rose- and wreath-laying ceremony.

St. Lucie County

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

MIDFLORIDA Event Center will host its remembrance ceremony with the St. Lucie County Fire District, Port St. Lucie Police Department and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Bells will ring at the times the United and American Airlines flights hit the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania

When: 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday

Freedom Festival & Memorial Ruck

Indian River State College Department of Military and Veteran Services is collaborating with #DoYouGiveARuck? to host the memorial at the Pruitt Campus. A ruck is hiking with a full backpack. #DoYouGiveARuck? is a nonprofit based in Vero Beach.

During the event, veterans will walk a 3.43-mile ruck to honor the 343 firefighters who died in the World Trade Center. A 1-mile portion at the end will be open to all ages. The event also will feature live music, food trucks and raffles.

When: 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

Liberty Garden Memorial Service

The city of Fort Pierce will host a memorial and remembrance service to honor local flight attendant CeeCee Ross Lyles. The memorial will be held at the site of her life-sized bronze statue at Liberty Garden.

Lyles was assigned to United Airlines Flight 93 and died when it crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the morning of the attacks.

When: 9:45 a.m. Monday

Indian River County

Tunnel to Towers 5k

The 5k walk-and-run event will be at Riverside Park.

The New York-based Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller. Siller hauled 60 pounds of equipment as he ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers to help victims of the attack.

When: 7:15 a.m. Saturday

Where: 3280 Riverside Park Drive

We Remember

A 30-minute presentation will be held by Vietnam Veterans of America, PostNet and Vero Beach Masonic Lodge No. 250 at the Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce, with seating capacity limited to 100 people.

When: 6:30 p.m. Monday

Where: 1957 14th Ave.

Patriot Day Observance at Veterans Memorial

When: 8:30 a.m. Monday

Where: Riverview Park at 600 U.S. Highway 1
